Harlan Ellison Lets It Rip

A big fan of Pinky and the Brain, author Harlan Ellison zings Warner Bros. over working for free. Alas, I'm guilty of said crime (Freak DVDs), but have ceased on writing gigs. Recently, I've passed on several opportunities to contribute time and effort to some project for a murky future payoff. It's a miserable scam. The interview is from a documentary on Ellison called Dreams With Sharp Teeth.

Gosh, tell it like it is sir.
My heart goes out to you.

The sculptor I was working for is worried the city of Dallas is not going to pay for those two huge sculptures he's been working on because the city is in trouble and they have a bad reputation for that these days. Then sure enough, they asked him if HE would like to pay the first payment.. 20,000 dollars? to himself?? WHAT??

As Ellison points out, people who make requests like that usually are being paid and would implode in rage if asked to donate their own time and effort gratis.

No kidding!
That's just so crazy though.. this is the man's livelihood, and it's a sculpture.. that takes alot of patience and concentration to do! The fact that he's been working on it all this time and probably hasn't been paid once yet.. is mind boggling..

Oh by the way, he almost died this week! He didn't know he had Diabetes and thought he was sick so he kept drinking fluids. My uncle found him Monday morning, out of it, lying in his shop [he lives there so I think he was lying in his room]. The doctors couldn't believe how high his sugar level was, they said he should have been in a coma. Praise God for that, guess he's not done with the guy yet.
